One of the many problems that face the people living in the mountains is the lack of a proper education. These people are basically forgotten by their own government leaving them with many struggles. The country’s yearly budget is focused more on developing towns and cities where the affluent live which leaves the mountain people to basically fend for themselves. Most of the mountain people I have met cannot read or write and they do not want their children to grow up the same way.
Since the government does not build schools in most of the mountain areas, the people that live there have taken the initiative to build their own. They send their own people to be trained as teachers so they can return to teach in the schools. The mountain people have built many schools but once opened they ran into another problem. Parents have to pay for their child to attend school, the money collected goes towards paying the teachers and related costs to operate the school. The mountain people rely upon income from their gardens; they are all farmers and therefore rely on the weather to produce a good crop. When natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes or droughts affect their area, the people suffer greatly as their only source of income is destroyed. With all the problems these people face day to day, many parents are unable to afford the cost of education. When teachers cannot be paid, they become disheartened and eventually the school is closed leaving hundreds of kids without education.
A few years ago I started a program to pay teachers, and we were able to keep some of these schools from closing. Even though we were able to keep the kids in school, the school lacked the basic needs to operate: no chalk, not enough benches, not enough blackboards, kids had no pencils, erasers, notebooks etc. So instead of just paying the teachers I came up with an idea to fully support a school therefore giving the teachers and children all the tools they need to function properly.
